DigiD (Digital Identity)

DigiD (Digital Identity) is the Dutch government's digital identity system. You need DigiD to log in to Mijn Belastingdienst, where you file your <a href="/en/glossary/tax-return">tax return</a>, apply for benefits, and manage your tax affairs. Other government services such as UWV, municipalities, and DUO also use DigiD. DigiD is free to request via digid.nl. You need your BSN (Citizen Service Number) and a valid ID document. The activation code is sent by mail. Since 2023, logging in with the DigiD app (with ID check) is increasingly required for tax matters due to higher security.

Example

You want to complete your 2025 tax return. You go to Mijn Belastingdienst and log in with your DigiD app. After the ID check, you see your pre-filled return and can add deductions and submit the return.

Why does this matter?

Without DigiD you cannot file your tax return online or apply for benefits. Request your DigiD in time, as the activation code can take several days. Don't have DigiD or can't log in? You can grant an authorization so someone else files on your behalf.
