Housing Allowance (Huurtoeslag)
Housing allowance (huurtoeslag) is a monthly government contribution for tenants with a relatively low income. The allowance helps keep rent affordable. To qualify, your rent must be below the liberalization threshold (€879.66 per month in 2025) and your income must not be too high. The amount depends on your income, your rent, your age, and your living situation. The lower your income and the higher your rent (up to the maximum), the more allowance you receive. There is a base rent you must always pay yourself – the allowance covers the difference between your base rent and your actual rent, up to a certain maximum. Housing allowance is paid monthly as an advance. After the year ends, the definitive amount is calculated based on your actual income. Like other benefits, this can lead to an additional payment or a clawback.
Example
You are 30 years old, single, and rent a home for €750 per month. Your income is €22,000 per year. Your base rent is approximately €280. The housing allowance covers a large part of the difference: you receive approximately €350 per month, so you effectively pay only €400 per month in rent.
Why does this matter?
Housing allowance is an important income support for tenants with lower incomes. Many people leave this benefit unused because they don't know they qualify. Always check whether you are eligible, especially after an income decrease.
