Healthcare Allowance (Zorgtoeslag)

Healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) is a government contribution to help cover the cost of your health insurance. Everyone in the Netherlands is required to have basic health insurance, and the healthcare allowance helps people with lower incomes pay for their premium. The allowance is income-dependent: the lower your income, the more healthcare allowance you receive. In 2025, the maximum healthcare allowance is approximately €130 per month for singles and approximately €245 per month for benefit partners combined. You are entitled to healthcare allowance if your income is below a certain threshold (approximately €38,520 for singles, approximately €48,224 for partners in 2025). Your assets must also not be too high. The healthcare allowance is paid monthly as an advance by the Tax Authority. After the year ends, it is calculated based on your definitive income whether you received too much or too little.

Example

You are single with an income of €25,000 per year. Your health insurance premium is €145 per month. You receive approximately €115 per month in healthcare allowance, so you effectively pay only €30 per month for health insurance.

Why does this matter?

Healthcare allowance is an important financial support for people with lower incomes. Many people forget to apply or don't know they qualify. Check every year whether you still qualify, especially if your income has changed.
