Childcare Allowance (Kinderopvangtoeslag)

Childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag) is a government contribution to childcare costs. You can receive the allowance for daycare centers, after-school care (BSO), or registered childminders. Both parents must be working, studying, or following a reintegration program to qualify. The amount depends on your combined assessed income, the number of children, the number of care hours, and the type of care. The Tax Authority reimburses a percentage of the hourly costs, up to a maximum hourly rate. The reimbursement percentage for the first child is higher than for the second child and beyond. The allowance is paid monthly as an advance. After the year ends, the definitive amount is calculated based on your actual income and care hours. This can lead to an additional payment or a clawback.

Example

You have one child in daycare for 3 days per week. The hourly rate is €9.50 and the 2025 maximum hourly rate is €10.25, so the costs fall within the maximum. With a combined income of €60,000, you receive approximately 80% reimbursement. That's about €830 per month in childcare allowance.

Why does this matter?

Childcare allowance can save thousands of euros per year and makes it affordable to keep working when you have children. Make sure to report changes (different income, fewer care hours) promptly to avoid clawbacks.
