Final Tax Assessment (Definitieve Aanslag)
The final tax assessment (definitieve aanslag) is the official settlement from the Tax Authority after processing your income tax return. It states exactly how much tax you owe or will receive back for a particular year. The final assessment replaces any preliminary assessments you may have received earlier. After filing your return, it usually takes several weeks to months before you receive the final assessment. The Tax Authority may deviate from your return if they find errors or disagree with certain deductions. In that case, you receive an assessment that differs from your expectation. If you disagree with the final assessment, you can file an objection within 6 weeks. It is important to carefully check the assessment: are the income figures correct, have all deductions been included, and has the correct rate been applied?
Example
You file your return and expect to receive €1,500 back. After 3 months you receive the final assessment: the Tax Authority has partially rejected your healthcare costs deduction and you only get €900 back. You now have 6 weeks to file an objection if you disagree.
Why does this matter?
The final assessment is the moment of truth: how much tax do you really pay? Always check the assessment carefully and file a timely objection if something is wrong. After the 6-week objection period, the assessment is in principle final.
