Taxes in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, income tax is divided into three categories, known as boxes. Each box covers a different type of income and has its own rules.
Box 1.
Income from work and home
Box 1 applies to most people. It covers income such as salary from employment, self-employment income, and pensions. Your owner-occupied home is also included in this box. Deductions and tax credits determine how much tax you ultimately pay.
Box 2.
Income from substantial interest
Box 2 applies if you own a substantial interest in a company, usually defined as owning 5% or more of the shares. This box covers income such as dividends or profits from selling shares.
Box 3.
Income from savings and investments
Box 3 concerns your assets, such as savings, investments, and a second home. You pay tax if your total assets exceed the tax-free threshold. The Dutch tax authorities calculate tax based on an assumed return on your assets.
